“There's no real objection to escapism, in the right places... We all want to escape occasionally. But science fiction is often very far from escapism, in fact you might say that science fiction is escape into reality... It's a fiction which does concern itself with real issues: the origin of man; our future. In fact I can't think of any form of literature which is more concerned with real issues, reality.” ― Arthur C. Clarke

The Venezuelan brass ensemble
The Venezuelan Brass Ensemble came into being in 2004 from Venezuela's state youth orchestra system (FESNOJIV).
This unique, State-sponsored system comprises some 200 children's and young people's orchestras. Its members come from various parts of the country and from different youth orchestras, most of them integrated into the musical and academic syllabus of the national youth orchestra, the Simon Bolivar Youth Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela.
The Venezuelan Brass Ensemble has set itself the task of giving fresh impetus to brass-instrument education in Venezuela. Since its foundation under the patronage of José Antonio Abreu, father of the Venezuelan orchestral movement, the Venezuelan Brass Ensemble has raised its professionalism to a high level with the exemplary support of internationally recognized musicians. Thanks to the academic guardianship assumed by the Berlin Philharmonic, and the financial support given by the Inter-American Development Bank, high-calibre teachers have been signed up for master classes in Venezuela.
The first international tour under the direction of Thomas Clamor in 2005 took the Venezuelan Brass Ensemble to Colombia, Peru, Ecuador and Chile, featuring concerts and also workshops with local professors for brass.
In Venezuela itself, the national youth orchestra is a regular guest in established concert series. In September 2005, in the course of the Youth Symphony Orchestra's major tour of Germany, the ensemble made its German debut in Hamburg at the Kinder zum Olymp conference; its programme included classical works by Byrd, Bernstein and Gershwin and featured the first performance of the Grand Fanfare for brass instruments by Giancarlo Castro.

Ο Phil Hearse σto παρακάτω άρθρο (International Viewpoint, τεύχος 355, Δεκέμβριος 2003, σελ. 28-33) ασκεί κριτική στο πρόσφατα δημοσιευμένο βιβλίο του John Holloway, «Change the World Without Taking Power, The Meaning of Revolution Today», Pluto Press 2002
του Phil Hearse

John Berberian
John Berberian(b New York City, c. 1941) is an American musician known for his virtuosity on the oud, the Middle Eastern stringed instrument. His parents were Armenian immigrants. His father was an accomplished oud player, as well as instrument maker, and oud masters of Armenian, Turkish, Arabic and Greek heritage frequented his family's home. He first recorded traditional oud music with violinist Reuben Sarkisian, when a student at Columbia University in the mid 1950s. He subsequently recorded for a variety of labels including MGM, RCA, Roulette, Verve and Mainstream Records. He expanded beyond the ethnic music market in the mid to late 1960s, decades before "world music" became fashionable, with a series of LPs which explored fusions between traditional Middle Eastern music, psychedelic rock and jazz. These included "Expressions East" (1964), "Music of the Middle East" (1966), and "Middle Eastern Rock" (1969) with guitarist Joe Beck. Berberian has commanded the respect of musicians worldwide. He has been featured in numerous concerts and dances throughout the USA, Canada and South America, and is one of only a handful of musicians worldwide given the title of Udi (oud master). He now lives in Massachusetts and maintains an active performance schedule.
